Enchey Monastery is situated in Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, East India. Located on a hill top, this monastery was built during the reign of Thutob Namgyal. The Enchey Monastery is an important seat of the Nyingma order. The Monastery is 200 years old, and is three kms away from the city centre. The highlight of the monastery is the murals depicting the defensive divinity and wheel of law on the porch. It was built in the early 20th with an objective that no other construction would be allowed near it. With the passage of time it has become a vital place of pilgrimage for Tibetan Buddhists. It was built on the site blessed by the great tantric Lame Druptab Karpn, known for his flying powers. He is supposed to have built a small hermitage at the spot he reached after he flew from Maenam Hill in South Sikkim. The shape of a Chinese Pagoda was given to the monastery during the reign of Sikyong Tulku (1909-1910). The Enchey Gompa of India also serves as a habitat for around 90 monks, belonging to the Nyingma order. The monastery has splendid images of Gods, Goddesses and other religious objects in its premises. Every year in the month of January "Chaam" dance is performed at this monastery of Sikkim. Also a puja is held every year in the monastery, and a religious masked dance is performed on the 18th and 19th day of the twelfth Tibetan month. It is advisable to visit this monastery during March to mid May and October to mid December when the annual religious dances are performed. How to reach Enchey Monastery: By Road A National Highway connects Gangtok with Kolkata, Darjeeling, Siliguri and Kalimpong. Regular bus services and taxis are accessible between Gangtok and Siliguri. By Air The adjoining airport is Bagdogra-Vadodra airport in West Bengal. Scheduled flights operate back and forth from Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati. By Rail The nearest railway station is at New Jalpaiguri, about 125 km away.
